Jacques’ story, returning home

Jacques is President of one of the Ex-Combatant Associations. He came out of the bush in 2004, when he was 18. Today, he is father of four children, all boys, and has spent the last three years working as a teacher in a high school. Transitions of this type are often extremely challenging, both socially and economically.

Therese’s story, a microfinance solidarity group participant

Therese is married with six children: four girls and two boys. Originally from Bunia, she has spent the last 10 years in an IDP camp near Beni in North Kivu. Her children, aged between 11 and 20, are all in school; her husband is an ex-combatant. She was displaced in 2004 by the conflict in Ituri when 60,000 people were killed. Recently, her new home has also been affected by violence: armed groups began indiscriminately attacking men, women and children with machetes in late 2014.
